On September 15, 2010, Angela Ryan Bourgeois (second from left) and Heather Shatford (third from left) of our office became the newest members of the Zonta Club of Amherst. They are pictured here with Margaret Smith (first from left), the Club's historian, and Kathryn Patterson from the Halifax Club (fourth from left).

Angela is an experienced lawyer who practices business, corporate, real property, municipal and wills and estates law. Heather is our office manager.

Zonta is an international organizations to promote the status of women. The Club is involved in a number of local initiatives, including the Zonta Fibre Arts Bazaar, coming up on October 15, 2010 at the Tantramar Theatre, 98 Victoria Street.

On June 18 and 19, 2010, Doug Shatford attended the Annual General Meeting of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society in Digby. The two-day gathering was entitled "The Zen of Practising Professionally: Ethics and Professionalism Across the Generations." It offered a number of discussion panels on topics ranging from the importance of social networking tools for lawyers, to cultural and ethical issues faced by practitioners.

Doug was a panelist on the "Hot Topics in Ethics" discussion, moderated by the Honourable Justice Jamie Saunders of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. Kim Turner, Q.C. of Pink Larkin and Tony Amoud of Boyne Clarke also contributed to the discussion, which focused on the generational gaps and differences on ethics issues.

Creighton Shatford supports local firefighters in bid to cure Muscular Dystrophy

The Amherst Fire Fighters recently held their annual Ladder Sit in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada and other local charities. Creighton Shatford is pleased to have been a t-shirt sponsor for the firefighters in their efforts to cure Muscular Dystrophy through their annual Ladder Sit.

Seen above is Angela’s son, Jacob, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, with Mr. Greg Jones, who spent 50 hours in the ladder to raise money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy.

Angela is a member of the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick bars and has an active practice in both provinces. After gaining over twelve years' experience at a Moncton law firm, you can rely on Angela to provide timely, clear and concise advice to your legal matters, both in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Originally from Springhill, Angela was excited to move her practice to Amherst. She became a member of the Zonta Club of Amherst. She has given talks on wills and estates to the Springhill Rotary Club and the Zonta Club of Amherst.

Angela is a proud supporter of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, being a member of the Southeast New Brunswick Mighty Drivers Chapter, Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Angela and her family regularly attend the annual Walk for Muscular Dystrophy.

Meet our new summer student: Waverly Bird

Waverly Bird brings her talent and enthusiasm to the firm. Originally from nearby Nappan, she has joined us for the summer. Waverly has completed her second year of law school at the University of New Brunswick. She did her undergraduate degree at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Finance and a Human Resources Certificate.

At UNB, Waverly showed her commitment to social justice by being actively involved with the Poverty Law Society. She organized clothing drives and participated in fundraisers for different charities. She also volunteered with the legal aid clinic in Fredericton. With two dogs, a husky and a shepherd mix, Waverly likes to spend time outside going for long walks in town or through the trails behind her family’s property in Nappan.

Marathon Running

Along with 26,000 other runners, Catherine ran in the 114th Boston Marathon last April. It was a clear day, and with the support of the cheering crowds, she completed the marathon (despite a bit of a struggle up Heartbreak hill!)

Catherine Hirbour to run in Boston Marathon this Monday!

Beginning at 10am on Monday morning, Creighton Shatford associate Catherine Hirbour will join thousands of runners in the Boston Marathon. Catherine is looking forward to the race and to visiting that beautiful city.

This will be Catherine's fourth marathon, and her first time in Boston. Stay tune for a report after she completes those 42 km!

Proceeds will go to the Cumberland Health Care Careers Bursary Program, which offers financial assistance to deserving students and encourages the formation of skilled medical professionals. We can see the practical impacts of this program first-hand: in 2010, four bursary recipients will start their health care careers in the county. The 2010 Distinguished Service Award for Healthcare Philanthropy in Northern Nova Scotia and the Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented.

Creighton Shatford's new associate, Catherine M. Hirbour . Catherine hails from Montreal Quebec . She completed her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Britsh Colombia : M.A at UBC in Political Science and her B.A at St.Francis Xavier University .
She Articled in Vancouver at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and was admitted to the Bar of British Columbia in the spring of 2009.
She will be admitted to the Bar of Nova Scotia , Nov 6, 2009.

Throughout the summer and fall of 2009 Creighton Shatford & Drysdale experienced many changes in a short period of time. Sharon French accepted a position with Nova Scotia Legal Aid working out of the Antigonish and Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia offices. Shortly after Ms. French's departure in August 2009, Creighton Shatford & Drysdale welcomed a new associate, Angela Ryan Bourgeois. Angela, a native of Springhill, brought with her many years of experience, and practices in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In September 2009, Paul Drysdale left the firm to become the Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Truro, Nova Scotia, office. Brian S. Creighton, Douglas B. Shatford, R. and Angela Ryan Bourgeois once again practice under the firm name, as it was in 1986, Creighton Shatford.Tom Nepjuk left the firm in the fall of 2009 to return to a teaching career.In October 2009 Catherine Hirbour , BA,MA,LLB.admitted to the Bar in British Columbia joined the firm as an associate .

CSD are attending the 11th Annual Foundation Dinner “ A Black & White Gala Event”put on by the Cumberland Health Care Foundation on April 25th. The firm will be supporting this event as a “Silver Sponsor”. The evening will include an art auction, presentation of 2009 Distinguished Service Award for Healthcare Philanthropy in Northern Nova Scotia along with Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year Award. The Ice Storm of March 3rd,2009

The storm left the firm without power for the day on Tuesday, March the 4th,2009. Fortunately , we returned to normal by Wednesday but there is still a problem with our server and we are experiencing difficulty with emails (both sending and receiving ). Hopefully that will be remedied soon. Otherwise our phones faxes and other services are back to normal.
As a side note ,Brian Creighton has missed all the fun being away for the week but he is expected to be back in doing business by the week of March 9th.
